Whiteout

Between late 2000 and 2002, my friend Chris Olson and I organized a regular happy hour event in San Francisco. Chris and guest DJs laid down techno, tech house and breakbeat every Friday at the now defunct nightclub Sno-drift.

The name “Whiteout” derives from the club, which was designed and billed as “sno-chic mod alpine.” It was designed by the team that created the Red Room and the former Backflip Lounge at the Phoenix Hotel.

Design

Flyer design is interesting work. The audience is generally bleary-eyed clubbers in a dark room with the attention span of a gnat. It has to be legible and attractive, conveying the necessary information in a split second. In one sense, success is defined by how many [cute] girls show up at your party.

For Whiteout, Chris made the music and I made the [pretty] pictures, mostly line-art and the occasional photograph. The typography is a mixture of Neue Helvetica and custom faces—ranging from complex to just plain blocky.
